Building policies differ, and a general gardening article cannot tell you what your lease permits. Use this list to prepare specific questions for your landlord, building manager, or relevant authority.

Ask about these six areas

Send a clear, specific question

Describe the item, where it will sit, whether it is freestanding, and how you will manage runoff. Include a photo or product dimensions if useful. Keep the reply with your lease documents.

Do not guess about structural capacity.

Wet soil and water reservoirs add weight. If a limit is unclear, ask building management before adding heavy containers. Do not treat a balcony as safe for a load just because a similar planter appears elsewhere.

After approval

Keep the walkway and drains clear, inspect containers after storms, and remove anything loose. If you move, choose pieces that can be lifted and transported without damaging the balcony.
